In honor of one of Kauai's greatest chiefs, KAUMUALI'I was the last independent monarch of the island of Kaua'i who reigned from 1794-1810. Kaumuali'i successfully saved his people from the ravages of war by successfully negotiating a peaceful resolution with King Kamehameha who at the time was battling with each of the island chiefs for the unification of Hawai'i.
